CEO of Instagram: shame on you for preventing users from deactivating their accounts more than once a week. I live in the most dangerous city of the world: Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. We are the murder capital of the world. 7,000 people were assasinated ,last year. Thousands had their heads cut off. The majority of the 7,000 killed in Cabo suffered terrible torture before they were killed...regardless of whether they were decapitated or not. (for the record, only about 650 of the assasinations were recorded and acknowledge by the local government and international media. They only count the bodies they find. Well...that is not how the cartel kills. Despite what you see on TV, most dead bodies are not left in town squares or hanging from bridges. 95% of the tortures and subsequent killings take place out in the desert. The bodies are then buried in mass graves with the idea of no one ever finding them.) I am a social activist and have been very involved in trying to stop the Hotel Cartel of Cabo from killing our local Uber drivers. I made a post on Facebook earlier in the week challenging the local Americans and Canadians to stand up to the Hotel Cartel and to stand up for our local Mexican brothers and sisters who are being killed by them. My life is at risk. More importantly, I face the very real possibility of torture before being killed. I believe in God very much, so I do not fear death. But I do want to avoid torture. It can be quite horrific. Because I had deactivated my account a few days ago as a test, I am now prevented from doing it again for another week. Because of your cancellation policy designed to cut down on losing Instagram users, my life is a thousand percent more at risk. The Hotel Cartel is primarily using the local Taxi companies to carry out their killings of the Uber drivers, as they have aligned interests in keeping the local Mexicans from seeing being an Uber driver as a proper means of employment. You see, Uber drivers in Cabo make 200% to 300% more than the slave wages that the Hotel Cartel pays. And, Uber drivers can now live a civilized life of only working 5 days a week and not the 6 days a week that the Hotel Cartel forces them to work. Uber drivers make about $2,000 a month. The hotel cartel pays their staff between $400 and $1,500 a month, depending on whether they are a gardener, maid, entry level, mid level, or senior manager. Because anyone in Cabo can now technically double, triple, and quadruple their income by being an Uber driver, the Hotel Cartel is having to face the reality of having to massively increase the wages of their employees. It's hard for a Hotel General Manager to now explain to their college educated managers why they are only getting paid $1,000 a month and working 6 days a week when a young person driving for Uber and who has no college degree is making $2,000 a month and working a traditional 5 day work week. The hotels in Cabo charge the exact same rates as hotels in Miami and New York...and often times our hotels are much more expensive. Part 3: There is plenty of money for the Hotel Cartels to pay their staff more. But....they know they don't have to, because they know they can easily replace a manager complaining about pay with another person who would love to have the job. The fact is...there are many poor people in Mexico and the Hotel Cartel exploits this. But...now that Uber has arrived in Cabo, it is much more difficult for the Hotel Cartel to explain to their staff and managers why they should be happy with getting paid $400 to $1,500 a month. The introduction of Uber is the greatest economic threat in the history of the Cabo Hotel Cartel. Facing the possibility of having to double or triple the salary of their staff is far more troubling to them than past issues that hurt their finances, such as the: global economic melt down of 2007- 2010, the swine flu epidemic in 2009, and the Drug Cartel violence of the past few years that occurred after El Chapo was arrested that sent the Sinaloa Cartel into a tail spin and allowed 2 new additional cartels to enter Cabo, etc. The Hotel Cartel just killed the lead Mexican figure head of the Uber movement 3 weeks ago. I am the lead American figure head of the Uber movement in Cabo. I am next. to die. Part 4 of 4 It is very well understood that I am on a kill list. Which leads me to needing to deactivate my Instagram account. As of now, every hitman working for the Cabo Hotel Cartel, and every Taxi Hitman can easily access my photos on Instagram. Yes...I understand that even with a deactivated Instagram account a google search can still be done in which my photos can be found... But....you guys are making it too easy for the Cabo Hotel Cartel to have me killed. I highly doubt that any sort of actual change to your Instagram Deactivation Policy will be made before an attempt is made on my life... But...for the future....in regards to other persons who find themselves in my situation, whether they are in Mexico, Central America, South America, Asia, Russia, and the Middle East, please consider changing your deactivation policy. I understand that business is business and that executives and shareholders judge your company based on user growth and retention and I fully understand how your policy helps you prevent user loss. But... Human lives are more important than a financial report that shows usage loss higher than you'd like. On that note...wish me luck and let's hope that I can lay low long enough to survive the kill attempt. And please change your policy on behalf of other social activists and do-gooders around the world living in dangerous places.
